
Mr Amaechi Okolie, a police inspector attached to the Anambra State Command, has been shot dead by his 10-year old son, after pulling the trigger of a loaded rifle assigned to his father.
The boy also shot his own brother who is the second son of the police inspector, but the victim did not die.
It was gathered that the incident happened in Awka when the boy who was unaware of the state of the rifle took it and pulled the trigger.
A statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga revealed that while the police inspector was confirmed dead by a medical doctor after he was rushed to the hospital, his second son was still in hospital and responding positively to treatment.
“The Anambra State Police Command has expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident that resulted in the death of Police Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka.
“The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, was allegedly due to an accidental discharge by his 10-year-old son. The son, unaware of the state of the AK 47 rifle assigned to the Inspector, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand.
“Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment.
“Meanwhile, the AK47 rifle has been recovered, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue,” he stated.
Ikenga said the command urged the second victim a quick recovery and condoled with the family and friends of the late Inspector,
