Former senator representing Ondo South, Nicholas Tofowomo, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tofowomo, who served in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, confirmed his resignation in a letter dated July 4, addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 3, Ile-Oluji, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, the former lawmaker cited the unresolved internal crises within the PDP as his main reason for leaving, noting that many party members were also exiting due to the instability.
He explained that after wide consultations with his political allies, he opted for the ADC, which he described as a well-structured opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
“If it was about getting a position, I would have joined the APC. But I chose the ADC because I believe in its ability and structure to stand against the APC,” he said.
Tofowomo also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the economy, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, despite acknowledging his earlier achievements in Lagos State.
He lamented the growing poverty and hardship in the country, arguing that there has been no tangible improvement since the current administration took over in 2023.
Reflecting on previous administrations, he praised the economic reforms under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and contrasted the independence of the Senate under David Mark with what he described as the current rubber-stamp legislature.
