One of the protesting retired police officers, Abdullahi Yahaya, has said that he receives N25,000 as his monthly pension after he served in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years.
Yahaya, who retired as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) while protesting alongside his former colleagues across various states of the country, said he received a total of N1,063,000 as entitlement upon retirement.
Retired police officers across states of the country are currently protesting against poor pensions, salaries and improved welfare for both serving and retired officers in the country.
Led by publisher, Omoyele Sowore, the retired officers have called for a review of the salaries, pensions and welfare packages for all serving and retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, Yahaya said the protesting team would march to the Police Headquarters, all governors’ offices and the House of Assemblies across various states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Noting that retired police officers who have dutifully served the nation for years are living in very pitiable conditions, Yahaya called immediate review of the poor welfare structure of personnel of the force.
Showcasing his payslip to journalists, the retired ASP said, “Look at my payslip. My gratuity was N1,063,000 and my monthly pension is N25,000. That is after serving for 35 years and retiring as an ASP. We’re over 300 retired officers on Plateau.”
