The government of Ondo State is controlled by two key figures: Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Dr. Olukayode Abraham Ajulo, SAN, CON. While some believe the Commissioner of Finance wields significant influence, it’s clear that Aiyedatiwa’s inner circle, particularly Ajulo, drives the State’s policy direction.
Aiyedatiwa has distanced himself from the elders who supported his governorship, opting for yes-men and women who prioritize their appointments over the State’s interests. He has also sidelined seasoned politicians, replacing them with loyalists. This sets the stage for Ajulo’s significant role in shaping the governor’s decisions.
Ajulo, a seasoned lawyer with a strong reputation, has become Aiyedatiwa’s trusted advisor. His influence is evident in the governor’s handling of the eligibility case at the Federal High Court. Despite Ajulo’s claims of ignorance, it’s clear that he coached Aiyedatiwa on the matter. The governor’s media chats and interviews reveal a scripted response, likely crafted by Ajulo.
The Federal High Court’s ruling against Aiyedatiwa’s eligibility has not deterred him. Two notices of appeal have been filed, and Ajulo’s recent opinion piece, “The Eternal Vigil: An Interogation of Nigeria’s Supreme Court Landmark Decisions” suggests they are preparing for a Supreme Court showdown. While Ajulo’s legal analysis is sound, his advice on this matter raises concerns.
As Aiyedatiwa’s Attorney General, Ajulo should prioritize the State’s interests over personal loyalty or any personal ambition. If he has advised the governor poorly or the governor rejects his professional advise, he should reconsider his position and face the door. The people of Ondo State deserve better.
Let’s interogate recent events in the polity. The sack of SSAs and SAs, followed by plans for new appointments and reappoints in what has been tagged ” A Comedy of a thousands laggards “, indicate Aiyedatiwa’s focus on consolidating power. Equally, the “Tinubu Datiwa 2027 Half Million Walk” suggests the third-term agenda is still on course despite constitutional constraints. Ajulo’s role in this is questionable and very unclear.
During the rally, Aiyedatiwa wore a vest with his own picture and “Aiyedatiwa for Governor” emblazoned on it. Not a Tinubu 2027 vest, but an Aiyedatiwa vest. Who’s deceiving who?
A leader is only as good as their advisors. Aiyedatiwa’s inner circle, led by Dr. Kayode Ajulo, is failing him and Ondo State. If Ajulo can’t provide sound advice any longer, he should step aside.
