Residents of Uso in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday blocked the Akure-Owo highway following the abduction of six worshippers in the community by gunmen.
Motorists were left stranded as the demonstrators blocked the busy highway to express anger and frustration over incessant armed attackers on the community.
Thefrontrank reports that gunmen invaded a Celestial Church in the community during a worship session on Tuesday night and abducted several members.
Eyewitnesses said the protest caused gridlock as commuters and commercial drivers were unable to access the road for several hours.
Confirming the abduction, the Ondo State Police Command said six worshippers were kidnapped at about 12:50 a.m at a Celestial Church located along the Uso/Owo Expressway.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, security operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and launched a coordinated rescue operation.
The Command further disclosed that one of the kidnapped victims has been rescued, while a suspect linked to the attack has been arrested and is currently providing useful information to aid ongoing investigations.
The Police assured residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the remaining victims and restore calm in the area
