Drama as thrift collector dupes clients N4.8m
A 30-year-old thrift collector, Mary Towolawi, was on Monday dragged before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing N4.8 million belonging to her clients.
The defendant, of no fixed address, was charged with stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.
During arraignment, the prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January 2022 and Octoner 2025, at LAPO Microfinance Bank, Badagry, Lagos.
He alleged that while working as a thrift collector for the bank, the defendant stole money kept under her care, and converted it to her personal use.
The prosecutor explained that she was arrested and handed over to police for prosecution.
He said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate A J Aina granted the defendant bail in the sum N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum.
He held that one of the sureties must be a community leader and adjourned the case until January.26, 2026 for mention.
