Five killed as speeding cement truck crashes into tricycle
Five people were on Friday night crushed to death by a truck at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Confirming the accident on Saturday, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), said it happened at about 8:30 p.m.
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred when the truck suffered brake failure and rammed into a tricycle conveying the five victims.
He identified the vehicles involved as an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with registration number GRZ 767 XA.
Akinbiyi said, “The tricycle was conveying five passengers, and sadly, all of them died on the spot.
“According to an eyewitness, the truck lost control and ran into the tricycle. The driver, unfortunately, was not observant until the vehicle’s tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers,” he disclosed.
The TRACE official added that upon receiving the distress call, the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene.
However, angry residents attempted to attack the rescue officials before the intervention of Amotekun Corps restored calm.
The bodies of the deceased were later deposited in a morgue by operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
This incident adds to a growing list of fatal accidents involving Dangote trucks across the country.
