Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Monday evening reportedly abducted two staff of the Ondo State owned University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko(AAUA).
The victims were reportedly kidnapped without resistance from their homes in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state.
Thefrontrank reports that the incident happened barely ten days after seven farmers were kidnapped in their farms in Itaogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The farmers were harvesting palm fruits in their farmland when they were abducted for five days by gunmen. The victims regained freedom after their abductors collected N5 million and food items as ransom.
The latest abduction has the workers of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko as the target.
One of the staff member of the university, Mr Omoniyi Eleyinmi is the Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Education and member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), who was kidnapped on Monday evening, August 4, shortly after returning from work.
The gunmen stormed Eleyinmi’s residence on the Akungba-Supare road around 7:00 p.m. shooting sporadically to scare away residents before abducting him.
“One of our SSANU members, Mr. Omoniyi Eleyinmi was kidnapped at his residence this evening at Supare-Akoko. He had just returned from work when the incident occurred,” a lecturer in the university said.
The victim’s wife explained that her husband was not at home when the assailants initially arrived in commando style.
She revealed that the kidnappers were still at the premises when Eleyinmi returned, only to be seized and taken away immediately.
Spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the abduction of the two university workers.
According to him, one of the victims has been rescued by the police, while efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining person.
Some residents who spoke to Thefrontrank decried the level of insecurity in the state under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
“Ondo State is presently under kidnappers’ siege with no meaningful efforts by the state government.
“What we have presently in Ondo State is that we’ve a dancing governor and someone who is preoccupied with congratulatory messages and posing for pictures on the social media platforms with no meaningful development.
“It is unfortunate that under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the security situation in Ondo State is at the zero level and nobody is safe anymore, unlike during late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu when residents were able to move freely and safe,” lamented one of the residents.
