The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the 2027 general elections.
The commission has moved the Presidential and National Assembly polls forward to January 16, 2027.
This followed the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the subsequent enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.
INEC in a statement on Thursday evening in Abuja, by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu, explained that the new legal framework necessitated a complete review of the previously announced dates.
Kudu stated that the commission has “reviewed and realigned the Schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework” introduced by the 2026 Act.
Under the revised timetable, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections have also been rescheduled to take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
Thefrontrank reports that INEC had originally slated the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly contests were to be conducted on March 6, 2027.
