The National Power Grid collapsed once again, leaving the country in darkness and disrupting electricity supply to millions of households and businesses.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on Friday showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts (MW).
Data indicated that load allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dropped to 0MW as at 1:10 pm.
The development came weeks after the grid partially collapsed in December, leading to a near-zero power supply in most parts of the country.
The perennial collapse of the national grid has continued to raise concerns, with many calling for a total overhaul of the electricity sector to serve the expanding needs of Nigerians.
This is the first grid collapse recorded in 2026, coming barely weeks after a similar incident on December 29, 2025, which had also caused widespread power outages across the country.
Grid collapses have been attributed to a combination of technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in generation capacity.
