A Federal High Court in Abuja is set to deliver judgment today in the alleged terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, with the proceedings to be broadcast live to the public.
The court’s registrar confirmed the arrangement this morning.
The courtroom was prepared for the historic telecast, with camera crews from major television stations, including NTA, Channels TV, AIT, and TVC, present with their broadcasting equipment.
Justice James Omotosho had scheduled the judgment for today following a hearing on November 7.
The date was fixed after the court foreclosed Kanu’s right to present a defence.
This decision came after the defendant insisted that he would not enter a defence under a repealed law, despite being allocated six days by the court to do so.
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho stated that by failing to utilize the opportunity given to him, Kanu had effectively waived his right to a defence.
The judge noted that he would have been willing to extend the time allocated had Kanu chosen to open his defence.
He concluded that the defendant could not claim to have been denied his constitutional right to a fair hearing after choosing not to use the window provided by the court.
