The Ondo State Police Command has warned its officers against warned against unauthorised roadblocks and extortion.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, gave the warning on Friday during a strategic meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders at the Command Headquarters in Akure.
Lawal threatened to sanction any erring personnel.
The meeting reviewed recent operations, evaluated performance, and set new security priorities for the state.
The police commissioner, however, commended officers for recent successes, including arrests of criminals, recovery of stolen vehicles, foiling of kidnap attempts, and the neutralization of armed gangs.
He urged the operatives to sustain the momentum through intelligence-driven policing and strong community partnerships with stakeholders.
On the ember months, political activities, and Independence Day celebrations, Lawal ordered intensified patrols and stronger community engagement.
He reminded officers of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s directive that offenders would face decisive disciplinary measures.
Commanders in border communities with Kogi, Edo, and Osun States were tasked to heighten surveillance and collaborate with locals for intelligence gathering.
Lawal emphasised that police officers must not interfere in civil matters such as land disputes, tenancy, debt recovery, or family disagreements, saying defaulters will be punished.
The CP stressed humane policing, directing regular inspection of police cells and reminding officers that torture and ill-treatment of suspects are prohibited under the Police Act 2020.
Addressing recent viral videos exposing corrupt practices by some policemen, Lawal declared zero tolerance for extortion, indiscriminate arrests, and incivility at checkpoint, warning that culprits would face immediate discipline.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Ondo State with fairness, professionalism, and integrity.
