The Ondo State Government has admitted owning sanitation workers of the State Waste Management Agency four months salary.
The workers are responsible for the daily sweeping of roads and highways in Akure metropolis.
Mrs Yinka Alabi, the Chairman of Ondo Waste Management Authority, acknowledged that the sweepers were being owed four months of their N35,000 monthly stipend.
Alabi, while reacting to the concerns over the delay, blamed it on administrative bottlenecks and late approvals by the state ministry of finance.
Thefrontrank reports that the sweepers had on Tuesday cried out over non-payment of their monthly N35,000 stipend since July, 2025.
Some of the workers lamented trekking to work daily in the face of the current economic hardship and dangerous working conditions.
One of the sweepers told a radio programme that although they are “supposed to receive N70,000 monthly, the agency pays N35,000, and still owing four months.”
However, Alabi appealed to the workers, saying the government is taking steps to ensure prompt and regular payment of their salary and prevent its occurrence.
“What we need to do is to make sure we are up and doing and get the approvals on time, so that we can process on time and get their payments across to them,” she said.
Alabi, who praised the workers for their diligence despite the economic hardship, said: “They’ve been diligent, they’ve been working.
“We appreciate them because they are doing a good job. Mr Governor loves them and has been showing it. Things will definitely get better.”
