Crisis of confidence is brewing in the Ondo State House of Assembly as twelve lawmakers accused the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji of misappropriating the sum of N50 million.
The lawmakers, in a resolution dated November 13, 2025, alleged that the embezzled ₦50 million was appropriated for a public hearing.
In addition, they accused the speaker of mismanaging the Assembly’s monthly operational grants.
The aggrieved lawmakers subsequently passed a vote of no confidence in the speaker.
The resolution read:
RESOLUTION OF VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE AND NOTICE OF REMOVAL OF THE SPEAKER, RT. HON. OLAMIDE OLADIJI, PURSUANT TO SECTION 92(4)(c) OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, 1999 (AS AMENDED) BY MEMBERS, ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY.
WHEREAS, the Ondo State House of Assembly (hereinafter referred to as “the House”) is duly established pursuant to Section 90 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended);
WHEREAS, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, the Speaker of the House, is alleged to have committed acts constituting gross misconduct, to wit:
I. Diversion of the sum of Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000.00) lawfully appropriated for the conduct of a public hearing;
II. Misappropriation of monthly operational grants of the House;
WHEREAS, the aforesaid acts contravene the following applicable provisions of law:
a. Paragraph 9, Part I, Fifth Schedule, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) – prohibition of abuse of office by a public officer;
b. Seventh Schedule, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) – violation of the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance;
c. Section 19, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 – abuse of office to confer corrupt or unfair advantage;
d. Section 390, Criminal Code Act (Cap. C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) – stealing by a person in the public service;
WHEREAS, the said infractions amount to gross misconduct within the meaning ascribed by Section 188(11) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) (applied by necessary implication) and have gravely impaired the institutional integrity and lawful operations of the House;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by Twelve(12) Honourable Members of the House, in the lawful exercise of authority conferred by Section 92(4)(c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended):
That a Vote of No Confidence be and is hereby passed upon Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji;
That the said Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji be invited by the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); for immediate investigation, prosecution (where applicable), and recovery of all misappropriated public funds.
