Some residents of Ondo State on Tuesday embarked on peaceful protest on major streets of Akure, the state capital, against arbitrary hike in house rent and exploitative activities of property agents in the state.
The protesting residents carried various placards with inscriptions, chanting solidarity songs to express their frustration over the worsening housing situation and rent amidst economic hardship.
They said the continuous increase in rent prices has pushed many residents to the brink of making decent accommodation increasingly unattainable.
According to them, the situation is forcing some residents into homelessness.
They also noted that the situation has forced some people to live in overcrowded and unhealthy environment just to survive.
The protesters advised the state government to urgently look into the unbearable prices on rent in the state.
As part of their demands, the protesters called on the Ondo state government to introduce a digital housing regulation app that would monitor and regulate the activities of landlords and agents.
The protesters also appealed the government to address the housing crisis in the state.
