Police confirm 12 dead, scores wounded at Bondi Beach shooting
At least 12 people were killed and scores injured when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah party on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia on Sunday, the police have confirmed.
Police say two shooters have been “neutralised”, while there is an active police scene to clear the area of suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Two police officers are reportedly injured, although the severity of their injuries is unknown.
Police also said it is not known at this stage if the incident is connected to the Hanukkah event taking place on the beach.
More than 50 gunshots were heard as an estimated 2,000 people fled.
Videos posted on social media show two men dressed in black firing rifles indiscriminately towards the beach from a car park as sirens sound in the distance.
Some reports are claiming that there were stabbings in addition to gunfire at the event for Hannukah, which is a Jewish celebration.
New South Wales (NSW) Police said they were responding to “a developing incident at Bondi Beach” and urged the public to “AVOID the area”.
A spokesperson for Anthony Albanese, the Australian prime minister, said he had been made aware of the situation, adding: “We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police.”
