Agboola Ajayi, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 2024 election in Ondo State, is set to dump the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa dropped the bombshell on Wednesday during his visit to the National Chairman of APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja.
Thefrontrank reports that the purpose of Aiyedatiwa’s visit to Yilwatda was to celebrate the Supreme Court judgment that dismissed the petition filed by Ajayi following his withdrawal of the appeal.
“The PDP candidate called to inform me of his intention to withdraw his case at the Supreme Court and that he will join the APC for us to build the state together,” an elated Aiyedatiwa disclosed.
Ajayi had stated in his withdrawal letter, addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court in Abuja and dated September 16, 2025, that:
“As the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, I have engaged in thoughtful discussions with my family, party members, associates, and legal advisors.
“After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn, and I’m signing this letter to do so.
“Having served as the former Deputy Governor and as a representative of my constituents at the national level, my foremost commitment is to the principles of good governance and the promotion of peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and across Nigeria.”
Thefrontrank reports that the former deputy governor started his political journey in 1999 on the platform of the PDP.
Ajayi’s political nomadism started in 2016 when he dumped the PDP for APC to contest the deputy governorship position.
On June 21, 2020, Ajayi resigned his membership from the ruling APC and returned to the opposition party PDP, citing irreconcilable differences between him and his boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Ajayi, after losing the PDP gubernatorial primary to Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, then joined the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) led by former Governor Olusegun Mimiko.
He was the ZLP 2020 gubernatorial candidate in Ondo State.
Following his abysmal performance, coming a distant third in the 2020 governorship election, Ajayi returned to the PDP to contest the November 2024 governorship election.
Competent sources told The frontrank that the return of Ajayi to APC, which he once said “has become a poisoned space,” is a matter of time in his political nomadism.
