
United Capital, a pan-African financial services institution, has announced the death of six of its employees in the Afriland Towers fire incident of September 16.
The blaze reportedly started in the inverter room located in the basement before spreading to other parts of the six-storey structure.
On Wednesday, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) said four of its staff members died in the fire.
In a statement on Thursday, United Capital described the employees lost as integral members of its family with the deaths leaving an immeasurable void.
The company extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims, pledging support during this “most difficult time”.
The firm said preparations are underway for a memorial service to honour the lives of the deceased with dignity and solemnity.
United Capital also expressed gratitude to emergency services and all responders for their valiant efforts during the incident.
The company called for solidarity and strength as affected families navigate the aftermath of the tragedy.
“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025,” the statement reads.
“Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void.
“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as providing all the support we can to them during this most difficult time.”
On Wednesday, Tony Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), cut short his US trip to mourn victims of the fire.
