Academic staff of the Ondo State owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), are poised for a showdown over unpaid two months salaries.
The lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warned that they will disrupt both the planned resumption of students and the forthcoming convocation if their outstanding salaries are not paid.
Sources told Thefrontrank that the staff are being owed two months salaries(August and September).
A strike was initiated last month due to the non-payment of salaries and arrears, resulting in the July salary hurriedly paid three weeks ago.
Dr Boluwaji Oshodi, Chairman of ASUU AAUA chapter, expressed frustration over the government’s inaction.
“We have been patient and tolerant for too long, but this time, we won’t be again.
“Our members have been pushed to the wall, and we see no indication that the state government is willing to rectify the situation,” he stated.
He lamented that efforts to hold discussions with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa have reportedly been unsuccessful, and mostly ignored.
Reacting to the issue, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, said that the government is still funding the university.
He said that the government has been regularly releasing monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions, including AAUA, without delay.
Ajibefun said the government is engaging with the striking lecturers to resolve the dispute.
