4 dies as vehicle crashes into dam
Four persons have lost their lives after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Kano State in a suspected tyre burst.
The tragic incident occurred in Dambatta Local Government Area while the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in neighbouring Jigawa State.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesman of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the accident happened on Tuesday evening.
According to him, the Dambatta Fire Service Unit received a distress call at about 7:10 p.m. from a resident, Suleman, who alerted authorities about the vehicle that had crashed into the dam.
He explained that the Golf Wagon, whose registration number could not immediately be identified, was carrying 10 passengers at the time of the accident.
“The vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Dambatta Local Government Area and involved 10 persons,” the statement noted.
Abdullahi said firefighters from the Dambatta station swiftly moved to the scene and succeeded in rescuing all the occupants from the submerged vehicle.
He, however, disclosed that four of the victims were pulled out unconscious and later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, believed to be about 35 years old, and Fatima Danlami, aged about 40, while the identities of two other victims had yet to be established at the time of filing this report.
The victims were taken to Dambatta General Hospital for medical treatment and other necessary procedures.
The fire service attributed the accident to a burst tyre after preliminary investigations.
Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution while driving to reduce road accidents.
He also called on relevant authorities to repair the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent further loss of lives and property.
