A yet-to-be-identified footballer was killed in a road crash involving a Mercedes-Benz C300 and a bus on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Monday.
The crash occurred around Magboro, in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, with the footballer reportedly among members of an academy travelling to participate in a football match.
Officials of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency and police officers confirmed the fatality at the scene, disclosing that the incident involved a hit-and-run driver.
An eyewitness said the academy members were travelling in two vehicles when a trailer allegedly struck the Mercedes-Benz, forcing it into the bus.
“We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus.
“Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived.
“Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards,” the eyewitness said.
The Mercedes-Benz, bearing registration number SMK-878KX, was severely damaged in the collision.
Efforts were ongoing to remove the wreckage from the expressway as details surrounding the identity of the deceased remained unclear.
The identity of the footballer has not been released as of the time of filing this report.
