Local Government Chairmen in Adamawa State have sparked outrage for allegedly sponsoring their wives to Istanbul, Turkey on a leadership training programme with public funds.
Thefrontrank reports that the Chairman of Toungo Local Government and state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria(ALGON), Suleiman Toungo, confirmed the trip.
Toungo, while defending the trip, said that it was necessary to equip their spouses with leadership training so they could offer useful advice to the chairmen on governance.
While defending the initiative, Toungo noted that council chairmen themselves had benefited from similar overseas training two months earlier.
“We did our training two months ago, so I do not see anything wrong in our wives going for training outside the country,” he stated.
He disclosed that the importance of the training outweigh the cost.
Thefrontrank reports that critics condemned the expenditure, citing the state’s high poverty levels.
