Workers in Ondo State have been charged to uphold integrity, professionalism, networking and accountability as a way to foster good governance and efficient service delivery to the citizens.
The State Head of Service(HoS), Chief Segun Odusanya gave the charge at the 2026 Ondo State Public Service Carnival held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, Akure on Wednesday, as part of activities lined up the Public Service Week celebration in the state.
Stressing that the pubic service remained the engine room of government, Odusanya maintained that the effectiveness of any good government depended on the quality of professional input, efficiency of public institutions and the ability of workers to translate government policies into tangible benefits for the people.
According to him, the public service is a critical instrument for translating government policies into meaningful improvements in citizens’ lives, stressing the need for workers to embrace transparency, innovation, discipline and respect for the rule of law.
He said the theme of the 2026 Public Service Week, “Harnessing Public Service to Promote Good Governance,” highlighted the strategic role of the workforce in the governance and development of the state.
The Head of Service noted that although workers operated in different ministries, departments, agencies and professional groups, they shared a common responsibility to serve the people faithfully and effectively.
Odusanya urged public servants to sustain the unity and enthusiasm demonstrated at the carnival in their respective workplaces, adding that the ultimate measure of public service success was the quality of service rendered to citizens.
He said the people expected a public service that was responsive to their needs, transparent in its operations, accountable for public resources and committed to ensuring that government programmes produced measurable results.
The Head of Service also disclosed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa would be honoured with the Award of Excellence in Public Service Leadership and Workers’ Welfare in recognition of his leadership and commitment to the welfare of public servants during the ongoing Public Service Week celebration.
He described the award as an expression of appreciation for the importance attached to workers’ welfare and the role of constructive engagement between government and its workforce in improving productivity.
Odusanya added that outstanding public servants also nominated from across all areas of the service would also be recognised for their contributions and exemplary performance.
He said the awards were designed to promote merit, encourage dedication and inspire workers to attain higher standards of performance.
The Head of Service explained that activities marking the Public Service Week included a press briefing, health walk, novelty football match between the Civil Service and Teaching Service teams, the carnival and award presentation, a public lecture, and Muslim and Christian thanksgiving services.
He commended the planning committee, organised labour, participating institutions and other contributors for their commitment to the successful organisation of the celebration.
Odusanya called on public servants to return to their duties with renewed dedication, integrity and a stronger sense of responsibility, noting that their contributions remained essential to the development of Ondo State.
