No fewer than 21 members of the Kano State contingent returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State lost their lives in a fatal accident in Kura Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the vehicle, carrying about 35 athletes and officials, fell off a bridge at Dakstalle town, 50 kilometres to Kano, on Saturday morning, resulting in a devastating crash.
One of the contingent, Ado Salisu, disclosed that the incident occurred as the team approached their destination in Kano, after travelling overnight since Thursday night from Ogun State, after the completion of the National Sports Festival.
”The Kano contingents travelled with about eight vehicles, and the bus that was involved in the accident was the last bus.
“The driver too is dead. As I speak with you, one other member just died.”
Ado Salisu who was clearly in shock said others still at the hospital are receiving care.
Among the dead are athletes, journalists, medical personnel and administrators.
Details are still emerging as some members of the team that won 29 medals are said to have gone.
While 21 fatalities have been reported, several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the Kura General Hospital for emergency treatment.
