Nine passengers killed as gunmen attack commercial bus
At least nine passengers were killed when gunmen opened fire on a commercial bus at Dungus Kuru T-junction, near Science School, in Jos south LGA of Plateau state.
The passengers were travelling to Jos when the attackers struck at about 9:40 p.m., shortly after the driver stopped at the junction to drop some passengers.
The shooting left the bus riddled with bullets, with blood visible inside the vehicle.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
A teacher and neighbour of one of the victims, Lawan Suleiman, confirmed the attack, identifying the driver as Ibrahim, whom he said was his former student.
Suleiman said three of those killed were from Bukuru community.
He added that the victims’ bodies had been deposited at a hospital as their relatives made arrangements to take them home for burial.
Confirming the incident, the Police Command in Plateau State said it received a distress report at about 7:45 p.m on Sunday that gunmen operating on a motorcycle had attacked a bus.
A statement by the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, on Monday in Jos, said the Toyota bus, with registration number BUU 621 ZL, was conveying passengers to Jos when the gunmen opened fire.
It said seven persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries later died in hospital.
The police said the development brought the total number of fatalities from the attack to nine.
