The commitment of the Ondo State Government to identifying the source of the offensive odour affecting parts of the state remains unwavering.
We sincerely empathise with residents who have been directly or indirectly affected, particularly those who have had to remain awake at night or temporarily leave their homes whenever the odour becomes intense. We fully appreciate the seriousness of the situation and remain determined to bring the distressing experience to an end.
Meanwhile, there has been measurable progress in our efforts. Rather than rely on speculation or unverified claims, the State Government has adopted a scientific and evidence-based approach involving systematic environmental sampling, laboratory testing and analytical assessment.
Findings from the process have ruled out the initial speculation that the odour originated from effluent discharge into the Ala River course. Further laboratory analysis has detected organic compounds associated with the pollutant.
However, the presence of organic compounds alone does not establish the specific chemical substance or combination of substances responsible for the odour. We are, therefore, proceeding with more advanced analytical techniques to identify and characterise the specific compounds involved and establish their chemical profile or fingerprint.
The ultimate objective is to achieve reliable source apportionment—determining, with a high degree of scientific confidence, the origin of the pollutant and the substances responsible for the odour. While this process continues, residents are advised to use appropriate nose masks as a precautionary measure, particularly when the odour is pronounced.
The Ondo State Government remains fully committed to deploying the necessary scientific, technical and regulatory resources until the source is conclusively established and appropriate measures are taken to protect the health, safety and environmental well-being of residents.
