The Ondo State Police Command has allayed fears over reports of a possible attack by bandits on the ancient community, especially on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where worshippers were killed in 2022.
Speaking on the reports, the command clarified that the origin and authenticity of the alleged threat have not yet been established.
A statement on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olushola, the Police revealed that security presence around religious centres across the state has been strengthened.
“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that while the source and authenticity of the said letter remain unverified, the report has necessitated a prompt and strategic response in the interest of public safety.
“Command uses this medium to urge media houses and members of the public to desist from spreading unverified information or fake news that could heighten tension and cause unnecessary panic.
“Such actions are counterproductive and capable of undermining the security progress we have collectively achieved.
“Residents of Ondo State are therefore advised to go about their lawful activities without fear or panic,” the command stated.
The command said precautionary steps have already been taken to prevent any possible incident and to ensure public safety.
It disclosed that operatives have been strategically deployed to churches and mosques, especially on worship days, and patrol operations have been intensified to deter any threats.
The command urged members of the public not to panic, emphasizing that collaborative efforts with other security agencies are ongoing to keep the state secure.
It also cautioned against the spread of unconfirmed reports that could trigger fear or disrupt public peace.
“Spreading unfounded information only creates unnecessary anxiety and undermines the stability we’ve worked hard to maintain,” the command noted.
It encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear but to remain observant and report any suspicious developments.
The Command also provided emergency contact details and its official social media channels for those needing assistance or wishing to report concerns.
