Researchers and scientists across the country gathered at Redeemer’s University, Ede, in Osun, on Thursday to proffer solutions to scientific issues in the country.
Speaking at the meeting tagged “Nigerian Science Leadership Programme,” a Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the university, Adewale Adewuyi, said that 35 scientists across the country were in attendance.
Adewuyi, who is the host of the workshop, said the programme brought together career scientists in the country to develop leadership skills that would translate to enhanced capacity among young researchers.
He said that although more than 400 scientists applied for the workshop, only 35 were selected after rigorous screening.
Adewuyi said the workshop was the third to be held in the country.
Also, Dr Michael Omodara of the Nigeria Stored Products Research Institute said the workshop aims to create leaders with the right mindset and skills that would generate research that impacts society.
Omodara, who is a facilitator at the workshop, said it was put together to see how scientists could imbibe the right skills using the right tools.
“The Nigeria Science Leadership Programme is an offshoot of the African Science Leadership Programme, which is usually held in Pretoria, South Africa.
“The workshop is about people of like minds, seeing our problems as challenges, then looking at how we can solve them by generating, clarifying, developing, and implementing ideas,” he said.
According to him, the unique thing about the African Science Leadership Programme is that it is done through a facilitating workshop, whereby professors, researchers, and career scientists impart knowledge to the participants.
