The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Information and Communication Technology in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Olajide Emmanuel Ipinsagba, representing Ondo North Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was passed after its third reading in the upper legislative chamber.
In his presentation, Senator Ipinsagba emphasised that the proposed university aims to provide specialised training in information and communication technology. He noted that this would help Nigeria bridge the existing knowledge and skills gap in the rapidly evolving digital age.
Following a clause-by-clause consideration of the bill’s merits, the Senate Leader moved a motion for its third reading, which was seconded by the Minority Leader. The bill was subsequently read for the third time and passed.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio expressed gratitude to the Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, as well as his colleagues, for their valuable contributions to the bill.
Senator Akpabio described the bill as a significant step towards expanding access to quality education in the country.
He stated, “this institution will not only provide critical knowledge and skills to our youths, but will also help shape the future leaders of Nigeria. Every university is a centre of universal knowledge, and we hope that students who pass through this university will be well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development and global progress”.
The Senate President also congratulated the people of Ikare-Akoko, Ondo North, Ondo State and Nigerians at large, describing the development a major milestone in the nation’s education advancement.
