An energy expert, Nick Agule, has called on the new Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, to revoke the licenses of Nigerian electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, and reassign them to competent operators.
Ajule made the call on Sunday in an interview on Arise Television.
According to him, Nigeria needs about 200,000 megawatts of power, stressing that the country currently produces roughly 5,000 megawatts.
“That gap means the new power minister has his work cut out for him. His reported statement on tackling metering, gas supply, and transmission issues raises concern.
“Those are operational matters. The minister’s role is policy and administration—to create the enabling environment for the businesses managing those challenges to thrive.
“The minister should revisit the 2013 privatisation exercise and ask why the transmission sector was not privatised. This should free it from bottlenecks and chronic underfunding,” he said.
