Abducted female councillor dies in captivity
A female councillor representing Ogugu Ward III in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, Rosemary Adukwu, has died in the custody of suspected kidnappers days after she was abducted.
Adukwu was abducted on September 30 while travelling to Onitsha in Anambra State.
The abductors intercepted the commercial vehicle she was travelling in around Oji River, between Enugu and Anambra states, and took her away, leaving the other passengers unharmed.
The Chairman of Olamaboro Local Government Area, Ameh Williams, announced her death on Friday.
The chairman said it was confirmed on Thursday that she was still in captivity.
The circumstances surrounding her death were not immediately clear.
The family said the kidnappers did not contact them to demand a ransom before her death was confirmed.
A family source also disclosed that the driver of the vehicle and the person who answered a call to the councillor’s phone had been arrested and were assisting with investigations.
The President-General of Ogugu District Union, Deacon Samuel Ige Agada, condemned the killing, describing it as a painful loss to the community.
Adukwu was buried at her family compound in Ogugu on Friday.
