The police have confirmed the death of four serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in a road accident involving a military gun truck and a commercial Hummer bus on the Narehi axis of the Girei–Song road in Adamawa State.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, the crash occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday.
He explained that the accident happened when the military vehicle, travelling from Gombi to Yola, collided head-on with the commercial bus conveying five passengers from Yola to Mubi.
Nguroje said six people died in the accident.
According to him, police preliminary findings indicate that the impact of the collision caused the commercial bus to overturn and burst into flames.
All five passengers aboard the bus were reportedly trapped and burnt to death.
He stated that preliminary identification showed that four of the victims were serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State.
“Two of the deceased corps members were identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both natives of Kaduna state, while efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims,” he disclosed.
Nguroje also confirmed that one military personnel attached to the military vehicle lost his life in the accident, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.
He said police officers and other emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene to carry out rescue and recovery operations.
“The bodies of the deceased have since been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola, while authorities continue efforts to identify the remaining victims and contact their families,” he stated.
