Bandits on Monday attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students.
The assault occurred in Lassa, a community near the Adamawa State border, sending residents into panic as the attackers reportedly rode into the town on motorcycles before storming the school.
A media aide to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Solomon Kwamagar, who is an indigene of Lassa, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers struck on the town’s market day.
According to him, the gunmen opened fire during the invasion, killing one teacher before forcing students from their classrooms and taking them away to an unknown destination.
Kwamagar said the exact number of abducted students and teachers had yet to be determined, noting that efforts were ongoing to obtain more information from the community.
He explained that although Lassa is located in Borno State, it is largely inhabited by the Margi ethnic group, whose members are spread across neighbouring Borno and Adamawa States.
Attempts to get an official reaction from the Adamawa State Police Command were unsuccessful.
