Barring any last-minute changes, Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in 2023 election, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, will defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week.
According to the Kwankwasiyya movement, the decision for Kwankwaso to join the NDC was sealed after a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders on Friday night.
Thefrontrank gathered the decision was made due to the lingering leadership crisis in the African Democratic Party(ADC).
Habibu Mohammed, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, said discussions with the NDC have reached an advanced stage, with only minor issues left to tidy up.
Mohammed disclosed that Peter Obi has concluded arrangements to move to the NDC on Monday or Tuesday.
“I believe him; Peter Obi and some others will be joining the NDC,” he said.
Mohammed said stakeholders from the 44 Local Government Areas in Kano State gathered at Kwankwaso’s residence on Friday at about 3:30pm to weigh the options — and, in the end, agreed to join NDC.
“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” he said.
Kwankwaso, he added, is currently in Kano and is expected in Abuja on Sunday ahead of the planned defection.
Thefrontrank reports that in April, supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso launched the “OK Movement” to mobilise support for a joint ticket of both politicians in the 2027 general elections.
