The Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and environmental quality following reports of recurrent odour nuisance in parts of the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko Ajisafe, stated in a statement on Friday in Ado-Ekiti that the government was fully aware of the situation and had activated a series of coordinated interventions to identify and eliminate the sources of the offensive odours.
According to the Commissioner, enforcement operations have been intensified across affected areas, leading to the sealing of facilities found culpable of violating environmental health standards.
She noted that illegal and unhygienic activities that may be contributing to the odour have been curtailed and were being closely monitored.
Also, as part of ongoing remedial actions, the Ministry had carried out the fumigation of dump sites, and currently prosecuting individuals arrested for indiscriminate sewage disposal.
In addition, environmental surveillance teams have been deployed to track and detect sources of odour emissions across the state, while investigations awere ongoing to ensure that all responsible parties are brought to book.
“The health and well-being of our people remain our top priority. We are taking decisive steps to address this challenge, and we will not relent until the situation is fully under control,” the Commissioner stated.
She further emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with government efforts by promptly reporting any unusual or persistent odours within their communities.
Suspected sources or suspicious activities should also be reported.
Members of the public are advised to report such incidents to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for prompt response.
