Tragedy struck in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday morning after a truck reportedly lost control and rammed into vehicles, killing two brothers riding a motorcycle along Reuben Fasoranti Road.
The victims, said to be middle-aged fruit sellers, reportedly operated a roadside business near Iyeoma Plaza in the Alagbaka area of the state capital.
The accident occurred close to the headquarters of the Vehicle Inspection Office, where officials were said to be conducting a routine stop-and-check exercise on motorists.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the operation caused heavy traffic congestion along the busy road before the truck suddenly crashed into vehicles and motorcycles in the area.
A commercial driver who narrowly escaped death said he had parked his vehicle to deliver goods when he heard loud shouts from passersby.
According to him, the truck rammed into several vehicles within seconds, while the two men on the motorcycle were crushed to death on the spot. He added that his vehicle was badly damaged in the incident.
Upon arrival at the scene, police officers from the Ijapo Division evacuated the corpses to a morgue as sympathisers gathered around the accident scene.
Residents and angry youths reportedly blamed officials of the VIO for the tragedy, while security operatives intervened to prevent an attack on the agency’s office.
