The Police Command in Ondo State has issued a stern warning to all cult groups and other criminals against any planned gathering, procession, initiation or celebration under the guise of the proposed “7/7” cult activities in the State.
The command noted that the intelligence available indicates that some cult groups may be planning activities to commemorate the annual “7/7” celebration, a development capable of threatening public peace, endangering innocent lives and disrupting lawful activities.
“In response, the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu, psc, mnips, mspsp, has ordered the immediate deployment of robust security assets across identified flashpoints and other strategic locations throughout the State.
“The deployment comprises operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Resposne Unit (VCRU), State Intelligence Department, Mobile Police Force, and personnel from various Area Commands and Divisions.
“The operatives have been directed to embark on intensive visibility policing, confidence-building patrols, surveillance and intelligence-driven raids to prevent any breach of public peace.
“The Command wishes to unequivocally state that it will not tolerate any unlawful gathering, display of cult insignia, brandishing of weapons, violent procession or any act capable of causing fear or panic among law-abiding residents.
“Any individual or group found violating the law will be promptly arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law.
“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards against associating with unlawful groups or participating in any activity connected with the proposed celebration. Proprietors of hotels, lounges, event centres, bars and recreational facilities are equally urged not to permit their premises to be used for any gathering linked to cult-related activities. Anyone found aiding or harbouring criminal elements will be liable to prosecution.
“The Commissioner of Police further called on community leaders, youth organizations, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
“While reassuring residents that adequate security measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety of lives and property, the Commissioner urged members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without fear, as the Command remains fully prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any attempt by criminal elements to undermine the prevailing peace in the State,” the command stated in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
